Unit Nine of Teaching the Bible (a 12 month complete Bible curriculum with hands on activities for toddlers and preschoolers) is the Easter bible lesson unit. This provides a great foundation for little ones to learn about Jesus and the true meaning of Easter. 

Lessons Overview

There are 7 lessons in this unit: Jesus Raising Lazarus, Anointing Jesus, Palm Sunday, Easter, Doubting Thomas, Jesus and Peter, and Jesus Goes to Heaven. Each lesson has 4 or more hands-on activities for little ones based on the length of days the lesson should cover. There are also three memory verses for little ones to learn during the unit. Each memory verse has motions and a poster to help in memorizing the verses.

Lesson 1: Jesus Raises Lazarus

This first Easter bible lesson, on Lazarus, should take about half a week for homeschooling or can be one week in church. The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead can be found in John 11:1-44. After reading the story and doing the activities your child will know that Jesus loved his friend so much that he raised him from the dead, but he also waited THREE days so that others would know that Jesus is who he said he is and that he will rise from the grave after THREE days! So your child will start to learn that Jesus is Alive with this story as we work towards Easter!

Children will memorize the verse:

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even if they die.’”

One of my favorite activities from this lesson is Pulse Finding. In this activity, children will learn about their pulse and how to find their pulse to know they are alive (just as Jesus is Alive)! There is so much more you can do with this activity as you can lead into doctors and helping others. One extension is to play doctor with your child’s favorite dolls or stuffed animals. They can work to find pulses on these items. Another extension for older children is to use a real stethoscope and listen to hearts beating. Children can also write down their heart rate (beats per minute) or other’s heart rates and compare them. You can also compare this to the normal resting heart rate of people different ages.

Lesson 2: Anointing Jesus

In this Easter bible lesson, toddlers and preschoolers will learn about the anointing of Jesus found in Mathew 26:6-13. After this lesson, children should be able to tell you that Jesus is Alive and was anointed before his death by a woman. This lesson should last about half a week or one class for church with 5 activities as well as the memory verse. This lesson is naturally combined with Lazarus for families teaching Bible everyday. The memory verse is the same as the previous lesson, John 11:25 NIRV.

One of my favorite activities from this lesson Anointing of Children. This is a hands-on experience for children to learn about anointing. Anointing is not something we do everyday now so it can be hard for children to understand what it means. In this activity, you will anoint your child’s feet with water or perfume to help them physically see what anointing means. This is a great way for the whole family to get involved into the lesson as you can have it as a family devotional activity as you lead up to Easter in your house.

Lesson 3: Palm Sunday

In this lesson, children will learn about Palm Sunday and Jesus riding into town while those on the road shouted, Hosannah!  The goal of this lesson is for your child to know that Jesus is Alive. The memory verse is the same as the last two lessons. The lesson on Palm Sunday has 6 hands-on Bible activities for toddlers and preschoolers as well as the memory verse motions and can be a whole week leading up to Palm Sunday or taught on Palm Sunday.

A really awesome activity from this Easter bible lesson is Blanket on the Road. In this activity, children will be blindfolded (if you want) and spun around before trying to place a blanket on the road in front of Jesus. This is a great family activity as older children might want to see who can get the blankets as close to Jesus as possible and younger children will find it a fun game.

Another activity that is super fun is Musical Party. This activity is about making music and praise to Jesus. It is very open ended and easy to pull together with instruments you might already have at your home. No instruments, then you can improvise with containers to make drums or making trumpets out of toilet paper holders. So much fun learning about praising Jesus!

Lesson 4: Easter

In this Easter Bible lesson, toddlers and preschoolers will learn all about Easter. This lesson is to last the week leading up to Easter or to be done on Easter.  The goal of this lesson is for your child to know that Jesus is Alive! In this lesson you will read or watch as much of the Easter story from the Last Supper to Jesus dying on the Cross to him rising from the dead three days later as you would like to with your child, taking into account their age and maturity. There are 7 activities for you and your child to interact as you process the story.

The children will learn a new memory verse, which will also be used in the following lesson: 

 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not parish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16 NIV

There are so many great activities in this lesson for your little one to fully grasp the Easter story, but one of my favorites is the Empty Egg Hunt. This can be used as real egg hunt for your child or it can be an activity you do during Bible time for that day. This is a great way to discuss the grave being empty!

Another great activity is a free process art project called, Cross Craft. In this activity, you will draw a cross on a piece of paper with a white crayon and have your child watercolor on top of the paper. As they paint, the cross will appear. This is a great way to discuss the importance of the cross and how Christ died for our sins on the cross.

Lesson 5: Doubting Thomas

Toddlers and preschoolers will learn about Thomas doubting that Jesus was real standing in front of him.  The goal is for your child to know that Jesus was really with Thomas and that Jesus is Alive! This lesson should be for about half a week at home and the week after Easter in church. If doing these lessons at home, you can combine with the following lesson to make a week. The memory verse is the same as lesson 4, John 3:16 so that the children can really learn the verse. 

One of my favorite activities from this Easter bible lesson is What is Missing? This is a great memory game for children. Your child will be challenged to remember an item that is removed from their sight. Your child has to remember what they saw before you remember an item. They have to tell you what item is missing. Younger children will find this game funny because they have to remember the item and older children will love the challenge. You also can make it more or less challenging based on your child’s ability.

Lesson 6: Jesus and Fishing

In this Easter lesson, your child will learn about Jesus helping Peter and the other disciples. Also this lesson will teach about Jesus sending Peter out to preach. The goal is for your child to know that Jesus is Alive when he appears to the disciples while they fished! This lesson should be for about half a week at home and can easily be combined with the previous lesson. It can also be a stand alone lesson for church.

The children will learn a new memory verse, which will also be used in the following lesson: 

“But here is how God has shown his love for us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romas 5:8 NIRV

One of my favorite activities in this lesson is Fish Math. This activity has so many different options that it can be tailored to each child. One option is just to count colored fish crackers, with an extension of writing the numbers down. Another option is to do patterns with the fish crackers. This is great for all ages as the patterns can be as easy or as hard as needed. Also your child could make patterns for you to figure out. Another option is doing addition or subtraction with the fish crackers. This is great for a young learner who is ready to do simple math. This can be extended with the child writing down the addition or subtraction sentence. Another option for an advanced child is to start doing simple multiplication with groupings. You can give your child groups of the same number (for example 3 groups of 5) and have them figure out how many total fish you gave them. This is a great simple multiplication problem. So many ways for this activity to fit different members in the family.

Lesson 7: Jesus Goes to Heaven

In this Easter lesson, your child will learn about Jesus giving the Great Commission and Jesus ascending to Heaven. The goal is for your child to know that Jesus is Alive and we can tell others that Jesus is Alive. This lesson will last a week or it can be a stand alone lesson for church.

One of my favorite activities in this lesson is Going on a Trip. In this activity, your child will help you pack for a pretend trip. You can have your child decide what to take and why those items would be needed. Then you can go on a pretend trip with your child. This is a hands on activity where your child will learn about Jesus going on a trip. You can also lead into a conversation about what we can take to Heaven.
