Old Testament Activities for Preschool and Toddler

Unit Two of Teaching the Bible (a 12 month complete Bible curriculum with hands on activities for toddlers and preschoolers) starts with Genesis and continues through the Old Testament including activities for preschool and toddler children to learn about Jacob and Joseph, Moses and the Exodus, Jericho, and Ruth. This provides a great foundation for little ones to learn that God is always with us so we do not have to be afraid.

Lessons Overview

There are 4 lessons with hands on preschool or toddler activities in this Old Testament unit: Jacob and Joseph, Moses and the Exodus, Jericho, and Ruth. Each lesson has 4 or more hands-on activities for little ones based on the length of days the lesson should cover. There are also two memory verses for little ones to learn during the unit. Each memory verse has motions and a poster to help in memorizing the verses.

Lesson 1: Jacob and Joseph

This is a bin full of homemade moon sand. The sand is colored from top to bottom: red, green, orange, blue, pink, and purple. This is to represent Joseph's coat of many colors.

This first lesson on Jacob and Joseph should last about a week depending on the activities you choose for your little one. The goal of this lesson is for your little one to know that God is always with us. This lesson takes your child from Jacob having a dream all the way through Joseph forgiving his brothers after they come to him in Egypt. There is a lot to cover and the activities reflect different parts of the story. This makes it super easy to break into different days. Your little one will also memorize this verse:

“And remember that I am always with you until the end of time”
Matthew 28:20 (God’s Word)

One of my favorite preschool or toddler activities from this lesson found in the Old Testament is Colored Moon Sand to represent Joseph’s coat of many colors. This is super easy to make. I made a set for three children in lesson and an hour. The kids love to be able to mix the colors and see what happens and then manipulate the moon sand in many different ways. My kids made cupcakes, doughnuts, and even discovered they could make sand castles out of it! It is fun that can last for a long long time! You can click below to buy lesson 1 only!

Lesson 2: Moses and the Exodus

This is the second lesson in the unit and is about Moses and the Exodus. It covers from Moses as a baby all the way through the Israelites leaving Egypt. The activities reflect different aspects of the story and should last you about a week. The goal of this lesson is for your preschooler or toddler to know that God is always with us. Your little one will work on the same verse as the Jacob and Joseph lesson.

One of my favorite activities from this lesson is fire painting. This is a great process art project for your little one. You give them a mixture of red, orange, and yellow paint and they paint as they would like with a fork. This is a great sensory project because painting with a fork is different than other ways to paint. It also is a great way to talk about color mixing. They can keep the colors separate or mix them to see the different combinations of colors they create. When all the colors are mixed it really does look like fire! Lesson 3: Jericho

There is a plate with graham crackers put together to look like a wall around a city. There are horn crackers around the "wall" on the plate. There are raisins inside the "wall."

This is the third lesson in the unit and is on the Battle at Jericho. Your child will learn about Joshua and the Israelites trusting God and not being afraid during the Battle of Jericho. This lesson should last about a week with an activity a day. The goal is for the children to know that we do not have to be afraid because God is with us! Your little one will learn a new memory verse:

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3

My favorite activity from this lesson is the snack. Who does’t love food??? This is a snack where your child will revisit the lesson again in a fun and engaging way. They will work to build a wall with graham crackers and peanut butter (or another substitute for allergies). They can add the horns aka crackers around the wall and even add some people aka raisins inside the wall. Once it is all built, your child can destroy it to eat it! Lesson 4: Ruth

There is Easter grass all over the floor of a room. Behind the Easter grass sits an Easter basket.

In this finally lesson of the unit, your child will learn about Ruth and Naomi and how they trusted God all the time. This lesson should last about a week with an activity a day. The goal is for the children to know that we do not have to be afraid because God is with us! Your child will work on the same memory verse as lesson 3.

My favorite activity from this lesson the gathering wheat. This is a hands on activity to really help your child understand what it means to gather wheat. They will work together to pick up all the “wheat they can” so that they can “survive” just like Ruth and Naomi. It is important for your child to understand that God provided that wheat for them and that they trusted that God will provide all they needed no matter what. You can click below to get lesson 4.
