Letter A Activities for Toddlers - Teaching with Faith

Today we are starting our letter A week, join along with us for some great letter A activities for toddlers. The first thing I set up for our A week is our Letter A Alphabet Sensory Bin Mats. I print out the letter A mat and cut outs. I laminated them and then hid them in the sensory bin. The kids went to town trying to find all the cards and match them to the right picture or letter. Apples

The first letter A activities created for toddlers that we focused on were for Apples. We did a taste test of different apples. I cut up a few different kinds of apples and gave small pieces to D. He tasted them and I had him pick his favorite ones. You could extend this with an older child, but letting them ask others what is their favorite type of apple and graphing it! This is a great way to include older children into your toddlers learning as well.

Another fun toddler activity for A is for apple is painting with apples. I cut the apples into different shapes so that they would make different kinds of prints. I gave him some paint on a paper plate and some apples cut up and he went to town. I did have to show him how to stamp the apples, but he had a blast painting all over the page.

A great activity is apple science. My favorite activity to do is to cut apart an apple and explore the different parts of the apple together. An older child could label the parts as you explore or even teach a younger child the different parts if they have previously studied the apple.

Ants

The next day we focused on ants. We talked about why ants are insects, where they live and why they are important. Our first activity with ants was to make the traditional ants on a log snack. We didn’t use celery but used graham crackers instead. I had the kids spread their own peanut butter on the graham cracker. After their peanut butter was all spread out, I gave them a handful of raisins to put on the cracker.

We also made our own ant farm craft from The Inspired Treehouse. I didn’t want to do a real ant farm as we constantly have to tell the kids that nature stays outside. The Inspired Treehouse (read about her idea here) has a great craft where you make your own ant farm on paper. We used black beans, a piece of brown paper , and some glue.

Astronaut

Astronauts for the letter A is our favorite day. Our first activity is to pretend to be astronauts. We set up the chairs first by laying the down. We rest our backs on the chairs and pretend to be taking off. We counted down and then blasted off. As we blasted off and “rode” into space we kinda bounced our bodies. After we got into space, we got out and did a space walk. We saw all the planets and moved around the area. After we saw everything we could think of, we headed back to earth by flying in our “spaceship.” The kids had a blast pretending to be an astronaut.

Africa

We started our day by looking a map of the world. We talked about where Africa was and how we could get to the continent. We were not only serious but also silly and talking about how we could drive to Africa. Both the kids thought it was funny.

We also talked about the different animals in Africa. One of our favorite activities is to do a live webcam of the animals in Africa. The kids love trying to spot the animals that we typically only see at a zoo. A field trip to the zoo is also a great way to talk about these animals. Check out my Zoo Field Trip Pack here:
