Letter D Activities for Toddlers - Teaching with Faith

This week we are onto letter D activities for our toddlers! We are so excited to be learning all the new letters through hands-on experiences. D is learning a ton! He cannot wait for school time everyday. This week we are focusing on ducks, dogs, doctors and dentists. This week we started by doing our letter D sensory bin mats. He loves this each week. We do it multiple times during the week and by the end, he is able to tell me all the different picture names. Grab a copy below:

Ducks

So our first letter D activities for our toddlers focused on ducks. We love taking a trip to our local lake to look at ducks. We talked about how ducks get around (by walking, flying, and swimming). We also looked at different ducks and compared them. After we got home, we pulled out the sensory bins and played with water and some bath toy ducks we already owned. This was fun because who doesn’t love a water sensory bin.

We also found a Do-a-dot page with a duck on it from Easypeasylearners.com. D loves these do a dot pages because he can go to town with our dotters! He had a blast and wanted me to print out other animals!

Dogs

The next day, we talked about dogs. We have a dog of our own so my kids already know about dogs. We looked at a poster of different dogs and talked about all the differences and similarities. We had a dog that passed away a few years ago and C remembers her, so we talked about the differences and similarities between our new dog and our old dog. We also talked about caring for dogs and how a veterinarian cares for dogs just like they care for cats. We played vet again as we talked about all the different things vets do! This is a great hands-on experience for little ones to learn vocabulary as well as what vets do in general!

Doctors

Today, we learned about doctors as we learned about the letter D with hands on activities for toddlers. We started by reading Daniel Visits the Doctor. D loves Daniel Tiger so anytime we can bring in those books or shows we do!

We also pulled out some baby dolls and our doctor’s kit to pretend play. Pretend play is a great way for little ones to work out complex issues. We worked on our baby dolls and made sure they were all feeling good. This is also a great way if you have an up coming doctor’s appointment for your toddler to learn what will happen during the appointment. They can work out all their worries during pretend play and also you can observe what might make them nervous when you get to the doctor. We love playing doctor so much, they usually run to it at the children’s museum.

Dentists

Our last day of letter D, we learned about dentists. D has already been to the dentist so we started our day by looking at a picture of a dentist and a child and talking about what happens at our appointments. We talked about good oral hygiene as well. We also pretended to brush a tooth as a craft. I found this cool craft at Paper-and-glue.com where you use a tooth brush to paint on white paint a yellow tooth to mimic brushing your teeth. D thought this was super fun!

Letter D Activities for Toddlers: D is for Donkey Craft

Our last activity was to make a D is for Donkey Craft. I cut out the pieces using my Cricut and then helped D make his own D is for Donkey. He loves these letter crafts and I hope your little one will to!
