This week we played a simple game to help practice the letters we have learned so far. It requires a bit of setup and some flashcards, but it is easy for your child to learn concepts that they might be struggling with. All they have to do is answe some questions and pull oranges off the tree.

Setup

C loves playing games and it is an easy way to review concepts she already knows. I did a bit of preset up so that this game would run much smoother. First, I printed out oranges and had my Cricut cut them for me. If you don’t have a Cricut, you need one, get one here! They are amazing for homeschooling littles. I was able to type and do other stuff on the computer while it cut everything out for me. I used a free orange png from the internet and just printed out 17 or so oranges. I already had a tree made from when I taught preschool (I saved a ton) so I used that tree. I just hung it with painters tape so that it wouldn’t damage the wall. I put on each of the oranges with painters tape too because I had it out and it shouldn’t mess up the tree.

Our Rules

We did letters because C needed some practice with letters we already knew. I grabbed some flashcards, get some here from Amazon. And we were ready to go!

She had to identify the letter name and then she could get an orange. Easy right? She loved it! It was such a simple game, but she loved it! She did it her own way. I let her take the tape or leave it on the tree if she wanted. She put all the oranges in her desk like they were a prize!

Variations

There are many ways you could use this simple game in your house.

You could use it to review numbers. They have to tell you the correct number on the flashcard to get an orange. Maybe they have to make a number for you before they can get an orange. You could also set it up as a word problem. Have your child count the oranges first. Take off so many and have them tell you how much is left.

You could use it to review letter sounds. We did this a bit, but have them tell you the sound the letter makes to get an orange. C did this on her own, but this could be a struggle for some kids.

You could use it as a competitive game, by having your children “compete” for the most oranges. Or they have to work together to solve the problems before getting oranges.

There are so many ways to use this game. I think I am going to hang onto it and use it again soon!
