Letter E Activities for Toddlers - Teaching with Faith

Teaching toddlers the letter E is easiest with repetition and hands-on activities that focus on England, Eskimos, eggs, and Thomas Edison. We started by reviewing the letter E with out Sensory Bin Mats. I printed out letter E and laminated the pieces. I hid them in a sensory bin and had D find them and match them to the correct item. He loves these and we do the activity many times a week to practice.

England

Our first set of letter e activities for toddlers was based on England. We started by looking at a map of the World and pointing out where England is in relation to where we live. We discussed how we can get over to England. We then looked at some big monuments and landmarks in England. We also looked at some webcams found here. I love showing my kids webcams because it is live and they get to see how other people are living around the world.

Eskimos

The next activities were based on Eskimos. We talked about who an Eskimo was and were they lived. We looked at pictures of eskimos and their igloo houses. We made our own igloo out of white squares. I just gave D a set of white squares and a black piece of paper. I painted on some glue all over the paper and let him build is own igloo. This is a great process art project because it doesn’t have to look like an igloo for him to learn. He is practicing his fine motor skills, as well as recreating pictures he has seen before. I gave him an igloo picture to look at to help with his recall. He had a blast. Of course C wanted to join in as well. Isn’t that how it always is, one kid is doing something and the other wants to do it too!

Eggs

The next focus activity was on eggs. We have eggs every few mornings so D knew what an egg looked like before cooking and after cooking. We looked at a poster of an hen house and discussed that the eggs comes from hens. We talked about how eggs look like different colors sometimes if you get them straight from the hen. We also talked about different types of eggs. Last year we had a bird build a nest on our gate, so we pulled up those pictures and talked about the eggs the bird laid. We described the whole process of the mommy laying the eggs, the eggs hatching and then flying away as birds.

A nest with baby birds is seen. There are two or three baby birds in the nest. They have just hatched and have no feathers yet.

Thomas Edison

Our last focus activity was about Thomas Edison. We looked at pictures of Thomas Edison and read Who is Thomas Alva Edison? by Margaret Frith. I love The Who is books because they give a good explanation of who the person is while also making it fun for kids. We talked about what an inventor is and how we could be inventors. We made our own light bulb by gluing yellow tissue paper to a cut out outline of a light bulb. D was able to practice putting glue on as well as the fine motor skills needed for putting the paper on the bulb.
