This week in preschool we learned about the letter I. We focused on insects, Indians, and Isreal as well as counting to 10 and learning how to write the number 7. We also watched the Bible stories of Jesus healing the blind man by the pool as well as Jesus stills the Storm.

Insects

We learned all about different types of insects. We learned that insects are very special to God and have a place in our world. We counted as we made spots on lady bugs. We made 10 lady bugs. I found the lady bugs at Fun with Mama. The lady bugs were playdough mats, but C used a q-tip and made her own dots. We counted each dot as we made them. She had a blast.

We also made a coffee filter butterfly. C colored it with markers. I had to keep reminding her to color all the way to the edge. She still mainly colored the middle. She ended up with a beautiful butterfly after we sprayed it with water and tied up the middle with a pipe cleaner.

We made our own Itchy Inchworm crafts as well. I used my Cricut to make an I for inchworm craft. I have been hand cutting out the letter crafts we have been doing and have been itching (haha) to have something cut them out for me. My new Cricut Maker has saved the day. I love it! I cut out an I as well as an inchworm and a leaf. Grab your template here.

We also made our own pompom Itchy Inchworm. C picked out the pompoms she wanted to use. I used a hot glue gun to glue the pompoms to a clothespin. We then added some googley eyes. It turned out great! The final product picture was taken by C herself!

Indians

This was a tricky subject. Our curriculum, Abeka, uses this as a vocabulary word. We talked about the word, Indians, and that we don’t actually refer to anyone as an Indian. We then referred to the group of people as Native Americans. We talked about historically the types of houses they lived in and the types of clothes they wore. We followed up the discussion by talking about the fact that Native Americans now live in houses like we do and wear clothes just like C does. We flipped through a book called, Who is Maria Tallchief by Katherine Gourley. We looked at the pictures to help C understand how Native Americans used to live and how they live now.

Israel

This was another tricky concept. Abeka focuses on Israel in Bible times. We looked at the clothes the people wore as well as their houses. We talked about where Israel was on the map and looked at a map of the area in Bible times. We also colored a picture of the flag and a map. C did great trying to stay in the lines of the flag, but it was difficult to color the star. We also made bread since people in Bible times had to make their own bread. We tried a recipe that was not very detailed. We are going to try it again next week with some tweaks we figured out might help.

We also made a scroll out of construction paper and popsicle sticks. I wrote the number 1-7 on the scroll and as she unrolled it she read the numbers to me. She loved her scroll to the point of it falling apart.

Bible Stories

We watched the stories on Jesus healing the blind man at the pool as well as Jesus calming the storm. We talked about the fact that Jesus was the only man who could do these things because God allowed him to do them. We tried to make a bubble art craft, but it didn’t really work. We put a little bit of water into a pan and added some dish soap and blue food coloring. We then used straws to blow bubbles. This was C’s favorite part. She kept blowing and blowing. We tried to pop the bubbles onto the paper, but it didn’t work. Two things I think that might have helped would have been to use less water and to use paint. I didn’t want to use paint incase she accidentally drank the water instead of blowing through the straw. We then added a boat and a Bible verse to the picture. Here is the final picture, it doesn’t really look like a storm, but she got the idea. It was also a great sensory activity for her. She played in the bubbles all afternoon.
