This week in preschool we learned the letter J. We are quickly moving through the alphabet. We talked about the number 7 as well as Japan, jellyfish, jellybeans, and jungles. We also watched two bible stories this week: Jairus’s Daughter and Feeding the Five Thousand.

Letter J

We started the week talking about jaguars and tracing the letter J. C has taken off with her Alphabet Friends song. She now likes to sing it herself as well as point to all the pictures on our cards (found here at Abeka) and flipping them over. We also made our own J is for jaguar craft. You can get yours here ready to go for the Cricut or Silhouette. Yes her jaguar has a tail that looks a little crazy!

Japan

We also talked about Japan. We talked about everyday life in Japan as well as the traditional aspects of Japan. We learned that Japan was an island and learned that meant that it has water all around it. We made our own Japanese Lantern were C practiced her folding skills. She did a great job. We also counted lanterns and learned about the number 7.

Jellyfish

We learned about jellyfish. This was probably C’s favorite thing we did this week. We watched the jellyfish live webcam form the Monterey Bay Aquarium. C requested we look at this webcam multiple times throughout the rest of the week. It is a very relaxing webcam so I let her. I enjoyed it to and still turn it on some as noise and a “show.” We also made our own paperboy Jellyfish. I ran into a little problem with this project because the safety scissors we had did not cut the bag. I ended up ordering the Scotch Kids Soft Touch Pointed Scissors.

I got these specific scissors because they are pointed so she could cut through different material better and they have a wide finger hole so she can put multiple fingers in to help her open and shut the scissors. Oh my word, her scissors skills have shot through the roof. We now just leave them out on the kitchen table with paper and glue and she goes to town!

Jellybeans

Today we talked about jellybeans. We sorted out jellybeans into different colors. C loved this activity. We also tasted the different flavors to see what was our favorite. We also made jellybean paintings. This was super fun. After we sorted the jellybeans by colors, I added a small bit of water to each cup. C stirred the water a bit. I added a little bit more water as needed. I then gave her cardstock and a small paintbrush and she went to town. She made 4 pictures! She was kinda upset that it was over because she ran out of paint. We turned this into a science experiment. I dumped the jelly beans into a strainer so that the water all went into the sink and we could see what happened to the jellybeans. This was super interesting to C, who also wanted to see how they tasted (note: not good).

Jungle

We also talked about the jungle. We learned about the types of animals that live in the jungle as well as all the different types of trees in the jungle. We celebrated by eating animal crackers.

Bible Stories

Jairus’s Daughter- This story is about a father that just wants his daughter to get better and can be found in Mark 5: 21-43. The little girl ends up coming back to life after Jesus’ heals her. We learned in this story that Jesus has the power to heal and has power of death.

Feeding the Five Thousand- This story is about Jesus feeding the many that were out listening to him teach. We learned that Jesus can provide all we need. We did a cute craft where we colored 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and glued them on a paper plate.
