This week I finally received a book I had been waiting for at the library. It was called The Day the World Came to Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim Defede. And oh my it was worth the wait.
The book chronicles the journey of several people that were on airplanes when the terrorist attacks of 9/11 happened. Their planes were diverted to a small town in Newfoundland called Gander. This was because the United States closed all air space after the attack.
I can’t image how scared and afraid these people were and many of them had no clue why they were being told to land until after they landed.
This book shows how the people in Newfoundland came around these “plane people” to help in a time of need. They had no extra clothes or anything else that they didn’t carry on. Some of them didn’t have medicine that was needed because they had checked it. The people of Newfoundland came around them. They brought clothes, towels, offered up houses for showers and just peace and quiet.
Please read this book if you want to know more about the people of Newfoundland helping out complete strangers. I promise you, you won’t be let down. I have had this book for about 5 days and have already finished it! It is an easy 244 page read. Every night I was reading, I had to force myself to put it away. I waited about 3 to 4 months to get this book from the library and it was worth it. It not only chronicles the actual events, but is laced in humor and drama. There are people with direct connections to the terror attacks as well as people just trying to get to or from vacations. I laughed a lot as well as cried while reading.
