This week we are focusing on letter L activities. Not only are we learning what the letter L looks like, but also what it sounds like. Repeating the letter sound while your child is doing the activities is a great way for them to hear and learn the sound. Remember this sound is /l/ without any other sounds attached to it. It is not la or le, but l. You can make this sound by placing your tongue right at your upper teeth barely sticking out. Letter L Learning Activities
One great letter L activities is using a sensory bin. You can fill it with whatever filler you would like. We commonly use rice, beans, or corn. We used lentils and corn for this sensory bin. I found a variety of L items around our house to put in the sensory bin, such as a toy lemon, a picture of a lion, letter L magnets, leaf from outside, a toy lamb, and a picture of a ladybug. I also gave him some cups and spoons to just dump and pour. As we sit and play, I repeat the names of everything he finds in the bin. This reinforces the letter and the letter sound.
Another great activity is using play dough to make letters. We just rolled play dough to make two snakes. We then put them together to make an upper case L. I showed D what to do, but he really didn’t follow me too much! That is okay, again it is about repetition repetition repetition!!
We finished our letter activities by doing a dotting page from Preschool Powol Packets. We printed out the L is for Lion sheet and let him go at it with paint dotters. He loved it! We also have some coloring pages from My Teaching Library that you can get here. D loved coloring and gluing the letters back onto the other sheet.

We also made a Lion mask! All I did was cut strips of yellow and orange pieces of paper. I cut out two holes for the eyes and had the kids go to town on adding the strips of paper. It does not matter how these are put onto the mask so just let your child have fun! Afterwards, I added a piece of string by punching a hole on each side of the mask and thing the string on. I measured the kids’ heads with the string so they could wear their masks all day!
