Storybook Learning: If You Give A Mouse a Cookie

These activities were inspired by the activities found in Curriculum Using Children’s Picture Books by Kelly Gunzenhauser and Sherrill B. Flora.

This week we are going to read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff. This book is about the chaos that can happen if you give a mouse a cookie. It is really funny and your child will love it!

Activities:

Beginning Sound Bingo

We used the Bingo game found here at A Spoonful of Learning. This game was great because the game boards have letters and the teacher uses the picture cards. I found that sometimes chidden cannot find the right beginning sound because they don’t understand what a picture represents. With this book, I recommend using mini cookies as the tokens to cover the squares. C had a blast. We played until she used all her cookies.

Cookie Jar Counting Game

We used the Cookie Jar Counting game from Fun Early Learning found here. We used this game to practice our math skills. We have been working on counting to 10 and C is getting much better at these activities on her own. I printed out the game board with the numerals and the colored cookies so that we didn’t have coloring added to our activity. This activity is great because there are different cookie jars that you can use depending on your child’s level.

Cookie Jar Phonics Game

There is another great activity from Fun early Learning that uses the same cookie jar idea but with phonic instead. Cookie Jar Sounds can be found here. We have been working a lot on beginning sounds so I used the beginning sounds jar and printed out the letter cookies. C had a blast matching the pictures to the letters. To make this easy to print and cut I used my cricut program to download the cookies and cut them through that system. I had all of the pieces cut in about 5 min.

Making and Decorating Cookies

Another idea is to make cookies. This can help your child with patience, measuring, fine motors and general kitchen safety. A great sugar cookie recipe is the William and Sonoma Kids Sugar Cookie Recipe found here. I usually just buy store bought icing to put on top of the cookies. C loves to decorate cookies with icing, sprinkles, and M&Ms.

Table manners

This experience is a great lead into teaching good table manners while eating cookies. Knowing how to eat politely at a table is a very important social skill. Give your child a cookie (or two if you are being extra nice) on a plate with a napkin. Show your child how to place their napkin in their lap and eat small bites over the table. You can even work into this process praying before your food and asking to be excused from the table.
