Book Gift Guide for 4 year olds
Magic Tree House Books
These books are C’s absolutely favorite books. We read two chapters a day at rest time. She loves to tell me about her “Jack and Annie” books. These are a great introduction to chapter books because the chapters are short and there are pictures in each chapter. These books teach a variety of subjects. We have been to the Amazon forest as well as the moon all with these books so far. This keeps C interested because she can look at the pictures as I read.
The Beginners Bible
C loves to read the Bible. She loves Biblestories. One of our favorites is The Beginners Bible because it is easy to read so your early readers can start to read on their own and it is simple. The pictures are cartoon like which is nice because it is similar to everyday books they read. You could also get the Audible version if your child likes audio books. To go along with this Bible, grab the Teaching the Bible curriculum to help your child understand the concepts at an even deeper level.
The Wonky Donkey
One of our other favorite books to read is The Wonkey Donkey by Craig Smith. C loves the rhymes and how funny it gets at the end. Reading to C is a great way for her to learn about books and the mechanics of reading. She also is learning rhyming with this book.
Activity and Game Gift Guide for 4 year old
Monopoly Jr
Monopoly Jr is one if C’s favorite games. She loves to play it and learning the different strageties. She can roll the dice and move her player on her own. She is starting to learn about the special pieces and cards. She can also practice social skills as well as counting with this game. If you need a board game to introduce to your preschooler, I fully suggest Monopoly Jr and I promise it doesn’t last as long as the real Monopoly game!
Play Dough
C loves Play dough and cutters. I can give her a color and let her go to town. Her favorite new cutters are the scissors and the rollers. She likes to also cut out circles and press them down flat into “cookies.” Play dough is a great way to practice fine motor skills that can be difficult for little hands.
Art Projects
C will do art projects all day long!! She loves to paint and color and cut and glue. We actually buy the glue by the big jug because she goes through so much!!! Art projects are great for fine motor skill development as well as creativity and imagination to form. C also develops her pretend play. The other day she wrote out a grocery list and then pretended to go get all the items for us.
Wooden Trains
Wooden trains have become a staple in our house. Our kids have a set that they build and take apart and build again. They love them. I love that they can use their imagination to build whatever they want. C lately has been using the ramps as a way for the trains to get up onto the track. It is super cute. She also is learning how things fit together and patience as it doesn’t always go as she has planned.
Gears
Our last favorite toy is another STEM toy, gears. We love building different sets and shapes with these gears and then watching them go ’round and ’round. C loves that they can build in patterns too! She is always showing me the pattern she made. She is learning engineering skills (which her engineer father loves) as well as patience and problem solving skills. Sometimes they don’t all turn and we have to find the one spot where we are missing one or a small one is instead of a big gear.
