This week we explored England preschool activities with a fun mix of hands-on learning!
C loves discovering other countries. England was no different. She was all in!
Here are a few of the activities we enjoyed. This was just a small part of our E is for Elephant week. You can read more about that here.
Language Development Card
We always start with our Language Development Cards from Abeka.com. This week’s card showed a map of England, the flag, Big Ben, a palace guard, and a boy playing soccer.
We talked about the flag’s colors. C noticed they were the same as the U.S. flag—red, white, and blue.
We also looked at how far away England is. I pulled it up on a map so she could see. We talked about how we’d have to travel by plane to visit.
She loved the soccer picture! C has her own soccer ball, so she already had a connection.
Tea Party
We also learned about tea time in England. I explained it’s kind of like our afternoon snack.
We talked about the foods people eat during tea—scones, little sandwiches, and of course, tea!
Then we had our own pretend tea party. C was in love with it! She used her tea set, which you can find here. It made the whole experience feel real.
Changing of the Guards
C was super curious about the guards in the picture card. We talked about their uniforms and the bright colors. I explained how they stand very still and never flinch.
She couldn’t believe it!
So we watched a video of the Changing of the Guards. It felt like a little virtual field trip. Someday I’d love to take her to see it in person. But for now, this was a great start—and free!
Big Ben
Our last England activity was all about Big Ben. C has a thing for clocks. She spots them everywhere we go. If she hears one chime, even better!
So she was excited to see the Big Ben clock tower. I asked her to find the clock in the picture.
I told her this one had a name—Big Ben. She laughed and said, “Like Daddy!” (Yep, Daddy is also named Ben. She thought that was hilarious.)
We watched a video of Big Ben ringing. It was recorded earlier this year, the last time it chimed for a while. We counted the chimes together. I told her that the number of chimes tells the time. We heard 12, so it was 12 o’clock—almost lunch time!
We’ll dig into telling time later, but this was a fun first step.
