For the last few weeks, I have been adding to our current homeschooling curriculum with an extra course through SchoolhouseTeachers.com. This website is amazing because of all the different types of courses they have. I used the Small World Sensory Science course which is available with the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com.

This past year I made a commitment to add more sensory experiences to our homeschooling day. Well I failed at doing that myself. We were get so busy with other things around the house and outside the house that I would forget. A week would go by and still the same sensory bin sat up on the kitchen counter. C loves to play in the sensory bin, but I was not always keen to coming up with ideas that didn’t make a total mess. So when I got this opportunity to find a course on SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I looked for a sensory experience.

This course was amazing. We talked about helping, the ocean, dinosaurs, pond life, farms, and many more. One of the best things about this course was that it gave me a new sensory experience for C for each lesson. And they were different each time. It was not just set up these items in the sensory bin. We had activities that were focused on using our hands to make things, using our mouths to taste things, using our nose to smell different things, using our eyes and ears to explore the world around us.

Here are a few of our favorite lessons we did during this course:

I Can Help:

With this lesson I let C wash her play dishes. We sang, “This is the way we wash our dishes when we help mommy” over and over again as she washed her dishes. C loved washing and drying her own dishes. D got in on the work too!

We also helped mommy with the laundry by finding and sorting Baby D’s socks. C thought this was soo funny!

Ocean:

The ocean lesson included a taste sensory activity. We made the ocean out of blue jello and whipped cream. It was fun! We added Goldfish and penguins (our store brand of Goldfish) to the ocean. And C didn’t like it! She is the only kid I know that doesn’t like Jello! So Mommy ate it and it was good (well I ate the crackers first and then mixed the Jello and whipped cream). It turned out cute!

Wind:

With the wind lesson, we made a wind chime. This was fun! C loved picking out the different spoons and forks and picking where they would go. I did this one spoon or fork at a time so Mommy had to hole punch the plate and tie everything, but C would put the string through the holes and pull until it was at a good height. We hung it outside on our back porch so C could see it when she goes outside to play.

Construction:

In the construction lesson we worked on a panting sensory experience. C rolled some cars in pant and then “drove” them down the paper. She really loved this activity and kept wanting to do more. I loved that it was a great process art project for her. We don’t do a lot of process art because it can get messy quick, but she did really well with this activity.
