For the past month, C has been using a great reading program from Blake eLearning Inc. called Reading Eggs. This is a game like program that teaches reading skills through a leveled program. C has enjoyed this program a lot. I like using games and apps to help her with her reading and Reading Eggs has improved her reading a ton by building her phonics skills.

Reading Eggs (Main Program)

C mainly plays this game. She is on her 3rd map. She will play for hours if I would let her. She doesn’t even know she has learned a ton. One thing that I don’t really like is they integrate reading full words and sentences into the phonics. This is great on one hand because it is pushing her, but she gets very frustrated at not being able to pass a level. I usually help her with this part by reading the words for her. I also have to help her with the spelling. She knows the sounds and letters, but when it is spoken quickly and she has to break it apart she struggles. I will say the sounds slowly as she needs them for her. This has helped a ton with her frustration.

It actually has her placed at 5 years old when she is only 3.5. I know that she can do it! I think this placement is what is part of the frustration because it is a bit above her in some ways. I will continue to work with her on these skills.

One thing I love about this program is that I get an email every time she moves (or doesn’t move) into a new map. I am able to keep track of her progress through the family dashboard as well as through these emails.

MathSeeds

C loved the MathSeeds games as well. She has completed 5 lessons in MathSeeds. She is learning not only numbers, counting, but also number words. She has learned how to spell numbers 1-3 so far. She is doing great. She does struggle with it so I help her by spelling them out for her and she picks the right word. She hasn’t done any of the driving tests, but could do the numbers one easily. She loves moving through the lessons so I will have to show her this game. She would not be able to do the Mental Minute for a while. This is a game where she has to add, subtract, multiple or divide numbers on the spot. She is still at a manipulative stage of addition.

Fast Phonics (PreK Version)

This is a great new game. We actually didn’t play this game for a while because C is obsessed with following the maps in the main game. Once we sat down to play Fast Phonics, she loved it more than the main game. She was so excited to get all the letters correct. She moved through the game really quickly.

These games are a quick drill like activities for phonics and letter names. They introduce the letter sounds with a movie like activity first and then the child has to find the letters in the next game. She did start sounding out words in this program just like the main program.

Other New Features

There are also new monthly themes. This would be really nice to mix it up for older children. C never got into the outfits or anything else where that is concerned. I didn’t want her to only do this so we didn’t even start, but I did notice that the characters’ outfits change as well as the theme of the map page. This does make it more interesting as it isn’t the same thing over and over again for children playing this long term.

They also have released a new Android App so now you can get the app on Apple devises and Android devices. This is a great feature for some families, but it didn’t really help us at all! C plays it usually on her Kindle Fire Kids and it isn’t not an app on there. I have to log into the adult account and pull it up online. It does still work really well on the tablet without her having to manipulate the screen so it is very similar to an app. I don’t let her play in a room where I can’t hear her because she is on a webpage and potentially could get onto another site. I would love it if they came out with an app for the Amazon Kindle Fires.

Overall Thoughts

Reading Eggs has been a huge blessing to our family for the last month. It is very easy to have C go and practice her reading by herself while I am either working with D or doing other things around the house. For the most part, she can work on her own and is learning a ton. I am going to continue having her play her “Eggs” game throughout the week to reinforce what we learning in our regular school. If you are a homeschooler who uses technology, this would be a great addition to any curriculum in my opinion. It can hold multiple children in the program so you can rotate it through your family during the day and each student will get the help they need at their level.
