This week we reviewed all our letters that we have learned so far (we are up to V-wow) using the theme of Arctic Animals. We talked about the Arctic Fox, Lemming, Arctic Hare, Polar Bear, Caribou, Musk Ox, Eskimos, Snowy Owls, and the Arctic Tern. We worked with numbers 0-15 and we reviewed our favorite Bible stories from the year.
Arctic Fox, Lemming, and Arctic Hare
The first day we learned all about Arctic Foxes, Lemmings and Arctic Hares. We learned that the Arctic Fox looked like a dog, but is smaller because it needs to stay warmer in the arctic unlike our pets in the warmer climates. We learned that a Lemming is a small animal that looks like a mouse and an arctic hare is a rabbit that lives in the colder air. All of these animals walk close to the ground so we talked about the footprints they might leave behind in the snow. I found this great game to match footprints to the correct animal from Preschool Everyday on TeachersPayTeachers. C and I both used our brains to figure them out because they were difficult.
I also downloaded a really amazing Preschool Arctic Animals Pack from 3Dinosaurs.com. Today we looked for the letter A for Arctic Fox and we glued the correct number of Arctic Foxes to the worksheet.
Polar Bear
Today we talked about polar bears. We learned that they live in dens and hibernate in the winter. We built a den in the playroom by using sheets and blankets that we found andread Polar Bear, Polar Bear by Eric Carle because it is one of my favorite books.
Caribou and Musk Ox
Today we talked about Caribou and Musk Ox. We learned that a Caribou sorta looks like a deer, which C is very familiar with since her daddy is a hunter. One cool fact that we learned is that they have air inside their hair which can help them swim across water. The Musk Ox is another large animal that lives in the arctic. We learned that they have hair that grow around their feet that look like socks. We played a game to review all of the letters we have learned so far. I drew a path on the board to the caribou and C had to tell me what letters she found hiding behind the grass that she fed to the caribou.
Snowy Owl and Arctic Tern
Today we learned that the Snowy Owl is white to keep him warm in the arctic. We also talked about the different animals that the Snowy Owl eats including the fish that he hunts in the water. We also learned that an Arctic Tern is a bird that looks like a seagull with a black mask.
We also did another sheet from the Preschool Arctic Animals Pack from 3Dinosaurs.com where we worked on patterns. C has not worked on patterns very much so this was a great way to practice patterns and learn more arctic animals.
Eskimos
We reviewed eskimos today. We talked about them living in igloos to stay warm in the snow. C made her own igloo using white squares on a black piece of paper. She did the glue on her own and then built the igloo. She was so excited to make an igloo that she made one again the next day.
We also played a matching game to review all the animals we learned this week. This was a super cute game was from Nugget & Goose. C loved it because she loves memory games. I am pretty sure we played it 3 or 4 times in a row.
We also played a counting game where we matched the penguin to the amount of fish he was going to eat. She counted all the fish and found the correct penguin all on her own. Grab your own copy from Preschool Activities Nook.
