This week we are learning all about the letter B and did a variety of activities that were geared towards toddlers for my littlest one. We focused on the letter b name, letter b sound, bears, butterflies, birds, and buses and boats. We did a lot of different hands-on activities to help him understand these concepts.

Letter B Activities for Toddlers: Sensory Bin

The first activity we did was our sensory bin with the mat. I printed out the letter B mat and cut outs. After cutting out all the cut outs, I laminated all the pieces including the mat. Then hid them in his sensory bin. He loved digging out the different pictures and matching them to the items on the mat. As he played, I reiterated the letter name and letter sound as well as all the vocabulary words. This is a great way for little ones to learn through playing. Bears

We focused on bears one day as we did our letter A activities. We looked a picture of a bear as we described bears in general. We also talked about hibernation (when bears go to sleep the winter away). We pretended to be bears and hibernate in a cave made from blankets. We also read one of my favorite books, We Are Going on a Bear Hunt by Helen Oxenbury and Michael Rosen. We did all the motions as we read the book.

We made a paper bear that we put on the board and added paper buttons to his clothes as we practiced our colors. I told D to find a color button to place on the bear. He loved putting the buttons all over the bear’s clothes.

Butterflies

Today we learned about butterflies. We started by making coffee filter butterflies. Both kids colored a coffee filter and then we sprayed them with water. After they dried, we added a body and eyes. Not only did they have a blast making their butterflies, they worked on fine motors skills with markers, the spray bottle, and the clothespin. I love it when they don’t know they are learning!

We also made butterfly prints with paint. This was a great way to introduce the concept of symmetry. I had them paint one side of a piece of paper. Once they were done, we smooshed the halves together and pulled them apart. This made a symmetric picture. Then once it dried we cut out a butterfly from the painting.

Birds

We started our day by talking about different birds. We discussed how they were the same and different. This is a great start to a math/critical thinking concept of similar and different. We also talked about the different parts of a bird. We looked at how their wings help them fly and how they beak helps them make different sounds.

We also went outside and listened to the birds. We tried to guess the types of birds we heard. We talked about the differences we heard. We also tried to guess where they were at in our environment. This was a great hide and seek activity. We also looked at the sky and counted all the birds we saw flying.

For our final letter b activity created for toddlers about birds, we painted with feathers. I gave each child a piece of paper and some feathers and paint. They dipped the feathers into the paint and then used them as brushes. This was super fun. The kids loved seeing the different ways the feathers painted vs. how a paint brush would paint. This is a great process art project as there is no right way to paint.

Buses and Boats

This was probably my son’s favorite activity we did for the letter B. We looked at pictures of buses and boats. We extended our talk about differences and similarities as we looked at the pictures. We discussed the different ways we could get around with buses and boats.

We also had a water sensory play day! We pulled out different items to see what would float like a boat and what would sink. This was a great way to introduce different concepts related to buoyancy. We then turned it into free water play. This was fun for both kids. They love to dump and pour.

Letter B Activities for Toddlers: Bee Letter Craft

Our favorite activity from the week was making our letter B craft. We made a Bee. I set it up by cutting out the different pieces with my cutting machine. I gave D the yellow B and put glue on it for him to stick his stripes down. Once he got his stripes on, he added his antennae and pom moms (his favorite part) and the eyes. Grab yours below:
