Page a Day Math Review - Teaching with Faith

For the last few weeks we have been using the PreK Math Starter Kit from Page a Day Math to supplement our daily math. I was super excited to see this opportunity because C has been doing a great job tracing her numbers with our regular math curriculum and I wanted her to do more! She has been doing addition with me visually so this was the next step because now she would be tracing the addition statements.

Kit

We got a physical kit which included 10 books, but you can also have a digital download of the kit if you prefer! The books started out very slow. The first book started with adding 1. This was great because she has never seen any addition statements before.

I loved the size and design of the books. They are approximately 8″x7″ which make them great for C to write in. The text is big enough for her hands but it does require a little bit more fine motor skills than what we had done in the past.

I also loved the box the books came in. When I get curriculum that I have to figure out how to store, it usually ends up in a pile on the desk, but this set was different! It was contained in a small box that was easy to open and housed all the books easily. I have just kept in all the books in the box so that I can easily move them throughout the house.

How We Used It

I really wanted to be able to set the book in front of C and walk away to deal with D or do some housework, but that did not happen. She needed a lot of direction to stay on task. It was not the work itself, but the fact that C gets distracted easily.

I tried two ways to approach the books. I started by letting her trace all the numbers until she started acting like she was done. We would then pick right back up the next day. I realized though that she needed to finish a page a day for her personality.

So, I started circling a few of the activities for her to do to call the page done. This worked out great. She would only have to trace 3 or 4 of each numbers and then move onto tracing a few of the addition sentences. C would then do the ones at the bottom on her own. She did great with this method. And her favorite part was coloring the stars at the end of the page. As we got further into the book, she was tracing more because there were more of a variety of addition sentences. The variety is what she needed. I am hoping by the next book, she will be doing all of the problems on her own. We will keep working up to this!

I recommend that if you have a younger child or a child that needs to develop their fine motor skills more, to adapt the books a bit! The first book had 450 math exercises in it! This seems to be a lot for a 3 year old. A 4 or 5 year old could definitely do this easily without adaptations.

EXTRAS

There are also some extra handwriting activities found at Page A Day Math that are great for new writers. There is a page where C could learn how to write her name after practicing all the letters. There are books on sight words, learning cursive, biology words, and so much more! We did a few of the letter tracing to help with some letters C was struggling with!
