This week we focused on the letter c and found some cute activities geared to toddlers. We learned about cars, cats, camels, and Canada. These topics were our starting points for all our activities for the week and we used our Abeka curriculum. The first activity we did was our sensory bin mats. I printed and laminated letter C for D so that he could find all the pictures and letters and match them on his mat. Grab your copy of all the letters below.

Cars

This was my son’s favorite concept to learn about because he is all about cars and trucks. We started by looking at different cars and comparing and contrasting them. This is a great skill to practice even as young as 2 years old. I did this by pulling out different cars he has asked him directed questions, “What car is red? Is this car red too? No, it is different. It is yellow.” All of this will help him later in life when he is learning comparing and contrasting. We also talked about the fact that before cars, people got around on horses. This is super easy for him to understand because we have been going to different pioneer sites in our state thanks to the Nebraska Passport program. You can read about one of our trips here.

We finished up talking about cars by painting with them. I set a ramp by placing a large piece of cardboard propped up on our bench. I then rolled paper down onto the cardboard. Then added some paint to the top of the paper and let him slide the cars down the paper. He loved this!!!

Cats

For our letter C toddler activities relating to cats, we started by talking about what a cat was and who created cats. We just finished talking about Creation, so this was a quick review that God made cats! We also discussed that many people have cats as pets. We do not have a cat because I am allergic to cats, but we have visited many friends that have cats so it was not a foreign concept.

We pretended to be a vet to a stuffed animal cat that we found. D loved taking the cat’s temperature and giving him shots. As he played, I narrated what he did. This is a great vocabulary building skill. It also is a great way to continue to engage with your child while they play.

Camels

Learning about camels was one of the harder letter C concepts for us. The kids have seen camels at the state fair and the zoo, but we don’t just have camels all around us!!! So we looked at pictures of camels and talked about their humps.

We also talked about feeding the camels at the zoo. Both my kids have done this at our local zoo so they could remember how the camel eats the food. We don’t get to actually put the food in the camel’s mouth, but we use a long tube to put the food in and let it go down to a feeding trough. The camels sometimes stick their heads over the fence trying to get more which my kids find sooo funny!!

Canada

Our last focused concept was Canada. We looked at a map to figure out where Canada was in comparison to our state. We talked about how we could travel to Canada. We decided we could fly, ride at train or drive, but a boat would not be effective in getting there.

We also read our book, Why I love Alberta? that daddy got for us a few years ago when he went to Alberta for a trip. This is one of our favorite books. We were able to talk about all the animals in the book that are found in Canada. A few years ago, C also did a study on Canada and we had a lot of fun learning all about this country to our north. Our last activity was to make our C is for Cow letter craft. D loves making these crafts because he is able to do all the gluing himself. It doesn’t always look like it should, but that is okay!
